Lifestyle strategies can’t erase all cancer risk. Your genes, family history, and age, as well as past tobacco use, sunburns, and exposure to certain chemicals and pollutants all contribute.

But an unhealthy diet, a lack of exercise, excess weight, tobacco use, infections, and too much sun and tanning-bed use are linked to 42 percent of cancers, according to a study by the American Cancer Society.

What can you do to have a healthier lifestyle?  “A simple way to start is by finding an easy way to be active every day,” notes Nigel Brockton. Ph.D., director of research for the American Institute for Cancer Research. “Also, start eating vegetables at more meals and as snacks.”
